About Me

Fine Arts, Event, Documentary,
& Portrait Photography

Richard Man, Photographer

I am a photographer interested in fine arts, documentary, portraits, … well just about anything other than macros and sports. I do a lot of work for the communities I am involved in: I have been the official photographer for anime conventions (in particular, Anime Los Angeles), multiple Costume Cons, multiple Worldcon’s Hugos and Masquerade, and Nebulas.

The primary focus of this site is my Photography Blog, as advertised, full of thoughts, rants, and ruminations on the state of Photography and my work. Thank you for reading.

In 2016, I continued three portrait projects with large format 4×5 films. All 3 projects are planned to result in book publications, and if possible, gallery shows.

In “Hearts on Our Sleeves – Stories and Portraits of Transgender People”, I am photographing transgender people.

In “Transformations:Cosplay”, I am photographing cosplayers / media-genre costumers in costumes and in their “civilian attires”.

In “Worldbuilders of Science Fiction and Fantasy”, I am photographing genre writers, artists, and editors.

My Encounter With Online Transphobia” describes how I and others were banned from an online photography community, simply because the moderators would not tolerate short descriptions of transgender people’s life stories just because they are trans.

On a lighter note, “The Art of Engineering” is my review of the new Gibellini ACN 4×5 camera! Hand made in Italy, it is a functional tool that looks good while doing it.

In addition to my personal projects, fine art photography and convention work, I also provide high-end scanning and developing services.

Negative and Slide Scanning Services

New for 2018! As a dedicated film photographer using 4×5, medium format, and 35mm film, I have accumulated a number of scanners which make my workflow much easier while also being able to produce the highest quality scans. I am now offering these scanning services to you. Bulk 35mm and High Quality scanning of medium format, 617, and 4×5 film including XPan now available.
